Adventure travel has become one of the fastest growing products in the tourism sector. Once the preserve of dynamic, young individuals on a one-man mission to tread new ground, travel companies now specifically tailor the adventure market to anyone and everyone who has the money to partake. Antarctica
Cook's ships crossed the Antarctic Circle in 1773 and various sightings of the polar landscape continued throughout the next century, but it wasn't until 1907 that the Nimrod Expedition, led by Ernest Shackleton, really explored this region in earnest. The river that takes its name and snakes through its heart is also the largest on the planet, supplying one fifth of the world's fresh water.
