Copper Canyon

Traveling to Copper Canyon is full of fun and adventure. The area is famous for the deepest Canyon on the North American Continent. The gorge is deeper than the Grand Canyon and the views from the top are to say the least beautiful.

Located in Mexico the area is of course being encroached upon by the human population. There are some issues with the cutting of the virgin forest. So if you want to catch the beauty of the place and still want to see some virgin forest plan your trip soon.

The people that have lived here for centuries are considered great runners and will capture the wild life in the area by running them to the point of exhaustion and capturing the animal. They have a great spirit and have made their living off the land for centuries. If you desire you can purchase handmade crafts by the locals and support their way of life.

The most scenic and safest way to get to Copper Canyon is by train. All the trains have an open air car. You will enjoy the advantage of uncut views and smell the fresh air of pine and woods as you travel through the area.

You can get a train ticket Divisadero station you will need to prepare yourself for a three day journey to arrive at the station. Once here you will want to arrange for a hotel and stroll about enjoying the local food and drink.

The area known as Copper Canyon consists of six different canyons with the rivers all running into the Sea of Cortez. They are green and lush for the majority of the year, unless you visit during the dry season. The forest here is made up of pine and twenty different species of oak.

Some of the highest water falls in Mexico reside in the area Basaseachic Falls is the second highest. You will see it fall from the top of the cliff to the pine forest below. The Basaseachic Falls are surrounded by the Parque Nacional Cascada de Basaseachic a National Park.

The highest water fall is The Piedra Volada Falls and it cascades almost fifteen hundred feet from a sheer cliff. Since the fall only runs during the rainy season and you would probably prefer to visit during a time of sunshine you probably won't see this spectacular sight.

You can explore the wilderness of the area on your own. But I would recommend for safety and being able to stay at some of the more spectacular hotels taking a small guided tour. Brush up on the language and you will find you want to linger in Copper Canyon. Enjoying biking, hiking and dips in the fresh clear water of the streams.
