Amboseli National Park Fact Sheet
Amboseli National Park is the second most popular wildlife reserve in Kenya, second only to the Masai Mara. The park is located in the Rift Valley Province of Kenya, just 240 kilometres from Nairobi and masses over an area of 392 square kilometres. A safari card is required for admittance to the park, which can be obtained from Kenya Wildlife Service if you are doing a self drive safari, or will be arranged by your guide if you have booked with a tour operator. Depending on which route you enter the park from, you will pass through one of the five gates; Kulunyiet, Meshanani, Kitirua, Iremito or the Airstrip gate. The temperature of the park stays pretty much the same year round, with an average between 20-30°C daily. Amboseli experiences two rainy seasons per year, the major rainy season occurs between March and May, and can see between 10 and 20 days of rain per month. The Minor rainy season lasts throughout November and December and brings between 10 and 15 days of rain in each month. One of the major advantages Amboseli has over other reserves is the view it gets of the gigantic Mount Kilimanjaro which over shadows the park. The mountain which is actually an inactive volcano is the highest of its kind in Africa and has three peaks Shira, Mawenzi and Uhuru. The snow caped mountain makes the perfect photogenic back drop for spotting wildlife against on a clear day and really makes an overwhelming piece of scenery. Amboseli National Park is a great destination for spotting wildlife, and is famous for its huge herds of elephants, the total of which reaches well over one thousand. There is also many other varieties of animals that inhabit the park, including the legendary African 'big five' consisting of lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo. Amboseli is also a great location for bird watchers to spot some great, unusual species, such as the African spoonbill, the super starling, the African jacana, the black crane and the miniature bee eater. There are quite a few different varieties of accommodations available in Amboseli depending on what suits you best. One of the most popular is the Amboseli Sopa Lodge which has the major attraction of seeing animals passing by the hotel bar and restaurant as they make their way through the reserve. If you are planning on visiting Amboseli anytime in the future, then be sure to bring your safari essentials: binoculars - for seeing the huge herds of elephants from a distance, camera - for getting snaps of lions lazing around in front of the Mount Kilimanjaro backdrop and your wildlife book - to identify any species that you may be unfamiliar with.
