Jump on a ferry and take it to any of the small islands along the coast where people still are living off the ocean and get a more rounded view of the area.

If you want to just lay in the sun, play in the ocean or enjoy a little shore fishing Nags Head Beach offers access directly to sandy beaches and fun in the sun. You can rent a kayak and head out into the waves if your feeling adventurous.

Taking a windy drive through the Appalachian Mountains on the Blue Ridge Parkway will take you through the history of North Carolina and onward to Virginia. As you start on a four hundred mile journey you can stop at Oconaluftee Indian Village and see how they lived centuries ago, admire their handicrafts and see the Ocanaluftee Indian way of life.

There are many places to hike along the parkway if you see a spot that catches your eye, pull over and stretch your legs. The water falls along the way are beautiful and heart stopping. Feast your eyes on the wildflowers in the summer or the colors in the fall.

You can stop along the way and see the Biltmore Estate even the Vanderbilts appreciated the beauty of this place. The Vanderbilts once owned an entire mountain here it now belongs to the park service for everyone to enjoy.
