There are many opportunities for volunteers abroad and Africa is always a popular destination. If it's a country that appeals to you then you'll want to take a closer look at becoming a volunteer in Kenya. Although famous for its stunning scenery and amazing wildlife, and thus popular for safari vacations, Kenya is nevertheless a very poor country and one of the areas that needs your help most.

Kenya is a fascinating place. There's great diversity not just in wildlife but in living conditions. In parts of Nairobi you'll find the great mansions of yesteryear and in complete opposite the Kyangombe Slums, where you can give indispensable help with orphaned children, or by assisting in the local clinics or, if you have a more practical nature, by helping build walls or paint classrooms. No matter what your particular skills you can have a remarkably positive impact on these people.

Despite the poverty and very high levels of unemployment, Kenya volunteer work is an uplifting experience. Whether it's helping at a local school in the tea plantations of Limuru or working as a medical assistant in Nairobi you'll see many smiling faces and meet people with a great willingness to learn and to interact. You'll even get the chance to learn a bit of Swahili!

Nairobi is a cosmopolitan city, the east coast is popular for water sports, there is tremendous ethnic diversity, vibrant culture and who hasn't heard of the incredible Maasi Mara? If you volunteer in Kenya you'll be helping some of the most needy people in Africa. You'll be rewarded with a tremendous - and justified - sense of achievement and you'll have the experience of a lifetime.
