Volunteer Vacations For Seniors

By Glen Coard

For seniors who wish to travel with the purpose of learning something new, they should most definitely include volunteer vacations. Combining travel and volunteerism has created an opportunity for the senior traveler to use their knowledge and skills to benefit other less fortunate individuals and make a difference in their lives.

What does volunteerism and senior traveler have in common? Many elderly travelers wish to experience different cultures and not from the front seat of a tour bus. They may wish to get involved in a local region of a country and assist in projects using their skills or knowledge they have obtained through previous employment or life experiences prior to their retirement.

So what exactly is a volunteer vacation? It is generally a short term holiday whereby both the single senior travel person and group of senior travelers become involved and make a difference in others lives. They work side by side with the locals and people of all different ages towards a common goal. This may include assisting with a literacy project in the Cook Islands, helping to build a concrete house in Central America, archaeological field work, sustainable agriculture projects, caring for children, or protecting marine wildlife in South America.

Short term programs are perfect for the senior traveler. They can range from a week to a month or longer depending upon the time you want to spend on a project. Many seniors take two or three trips a year whereby they assist in a variety of ways at different destinations.

There is a cost to this type of travel but it means that you are financially supporting yourself and also assisting with the funding of the project. The cost usually includes accommodation, meals and maybe educational lectures or local tours. For those on a tight budget this type of travel offers excellent value. It won't include travel insurance so senior travel persons should contact their own agent for senior travel insurance. Accommodation may mean living with a local family, staying in a dormitory, or camping. Some may offer private rooms with all the modern conveniences such as air conditioning and a dining room. You may even be the volunteer who helps in the kitchen to provide meals for the workers.

There are many organizations that welcome the senior travel person and offer senior friendly work environments. These organizations are over the world and one of them is Transitions Abroad, a very well known travel organization offering many opportunities for elderly travel people who have a variety of interests and needs.

There are many reasons why seniors become involved in volunteer vacations and whether you have a special interest, unique skill or just a desire to help you are definitely needed and will be appreciated. I can almost guarantee you will be richer for the experience.
